Peterborough is located along the Contoocook River. It is 38 miles southwest of Manchester, NH and 72 miles northwest of Boston. Once a bustling mill town, Peterborough has beautiful architecture throughout town. Peterborough is home to many startups and as of 2015, one-third of residents are home-based entrepreneurs or telecommuters. Peterborough is also a pretty large tourist destination. Peterborough has many hiking trails, cross-country skiing trails, and is known for its kayaking, fishing, and cycling. Since 2014, Peterborough has been 100% powered by sustainable energy.
Many artists also flock to Peterborough for the MacDowell Colony, a creative retreat that provides grants to 250 artists per year. The first Friday monthly, the town celebrates these creatives with gallery openings, special shopping opportunities, and other events.
Students in Peterborough attend SAU 1 schools with students from Greenfield, Antrim, Dublin, Hancock, Sharon, Temple, Bennington, and Francestown. Elementary aged students attended Peterborough Elementary School. South Meadow Middle School serves middle schoolers in Peterborough. High schoolers attend Contoocook Valley Regional High School. The Clay Mathematics Institute is also located in Peterborough.
