Keene is the largest community in Cheshire County. In late August / early September, Keene hosts the Keene Music Festival. Dozens of bands and thousands of visitors come to the city. Keene was once known for the Keene Pumpkin Festival, which was canceled after the 2014 festival, and later moved to Laconia, NH.
Keene is part of SAU 29 along with Chesterfield, Harrisville, Marlborough, Marlow, Nelson, and Westmoreland. Keene has four elementary schools: John H Fuller Elementary, Benjamin Franklin Elementary, Symonds Elementary, and Wheelock Elementary. Keene students attend Keene Middle School. Keene High School is a regional high school that serves about 1,850 students.
